The New Tie-Break Ranking System Explained
The United Grid League is utilizing a new team owner-voted ranking system as the tiebreaker beyond match record. The change passed by a 5-4 vote among team owners, with one team opting not to vote. With only four regular season matches, the system measures every team against every other team in the league, in every race, all season long.
The Problem With a Short Season
In the NFL, a team plays 17 games. In the NBA, 82. Over that many contests, strength of schedule mostly evens out. With a four-match regular season, strength of schedule (meaning how good the teams are that you play) matters more.
The conference system is a common structure in team sports and provides many benefits as the league grows. Rather than flop back and forth between having conferences and not, the League has prioritized consistency year to year, even in years when a large percentage of matchups are cross-conference. The new ranking system (and the expanded playoff detailed below) is built to help ensure the best teams make the playoffs.
How Seeding Works
Like any sports league, the seed is first determined by match record. When teams are tied in match record, the first tiebreaker is a new measure called the Season Rank Total.
The Season Rank Total
Grid League matches are made up of individual races, run head-to-head on parallel lanes of the Grid. After every race, the League ranks each team’s result from 1 to 10 against every other team’s result in that same race format across the season so far. Run the fastest time in the league on a given race and you’re ranked 1, even against teams you never lined up across from. Run the slowest and you’re ranked 10.
Those rank numbers get added up across every race of the season. The lower your total, the better you’ve performed against the entire league. When two teams are tied in the standings, the team with the lower Season Rank Total takes the higher seed.

Ringer Point races are excluded because each team picks its own format, so results aren’t comparable across the league. Teams that tie in a race share the same rank. Teams that time-cap or fail to finish get grouped at the bottom of the rankings for that race. The League recalculates the totals after every match, so the number is live in the standings all season.
Expanded Playoff Picture
The ranking system feeds an expanded playoff. The top three seeds from each conference qualify, six teams in all, which is the majority of the league. The top seed in each conference earns a first-round bye, while the second and third seed meet in the first playoff matchup. Winners move on, and each conference’s bracket produces a winner. Those two teams meet in the Championship.

Both changes point at the same goal. A wider playoff door and a ranking system that looks at the whole league mean the better teams in the league are more likely to make the playoffs, even when schedules aren’t equal.
If teams remain tied after the Season Rank Total, the next tiebreakers are margin of victory in match play, then race win differential, which adds up the seconds a team won by and subtracts the seconds it lost by.
So when a team posts a fast time in an early-season race, it isn’t just banking two points in that match. It’s putting a number on the board that every other team in the league has to answer for the rest of the year.
