The Buttery Bros join the Grid League

The Buttery Bros are well known creators in the CrossFit community and never shy away from a challenge. They had heard of the United Grid League, but didn’t know much about it. They decided to jump in head first and take on some of the bast players in the Grid League in some races and learn about the League from the inside. Here is what they found out.

The United Grid League has caught the eye of sports enthusiasts by blending CrossFit-like athleticism with team-based strategy like football. The league traces its origins back to Tony Budding, a former CrossFit HQ figure who, in 2014, left to create a new team-driven sport. Although Budding’s version didn’t last long due to budget issues, his vision was revived under a new model as the Florida Grid League. Now, the league is gaining traction and expanding nationally, with teams in Texas and Atlanta and has rebranded to the United Grid League.

The Grid League offers a unique, race-based structure where two teams compete in short, intense events that focus on speed, strength, strategy and teamwork. Matches are structured as a series of races, with athletes completing various physical tasks on a playing field called the GRID. The season includes regular season matches, playoffs, and a championship. The player positions include bodyweight specialists, strength specialists, or utility players who can excel across multiple areas, creating a dynamic and fast-paced game style. Events have names like “Sprint Relay,” “Echo,” and “Ringers,” each testing different strengths.

The league emphasizes excitement and accessibility for fans. Grid League matches are quick and to the point, avoiding long, drawn-out events, which helps keep spectators engaged. Its large team heavy format is a contrast to traditional CrossFit, where the events are more indivitually focused. In some races, each team sends out their best athletes, resulting in thrilling, one-on-one matchups. This approach has even sparked interest from CrossFit fans who see Grid League as a potential model for improving team-based fitness events.

The league also features in-match reviews similar to the NFL, where teams can challenge decisions, adding an element of real-time strategy. Fans can see races re-run after close calls, making each match even more suspenseful. While some criticize the league’s movement risks—given the intense physical demands and quick transitions—comparing to other sports (especially contact sports) the sport is very much on the safer side.
