From Wrestling Mat to Grid League: Matt Rattay’s Journey as a Multi-Sport Athlete
In 2017, Matt Rattay stunned the CrossFit world by setting a Regional record in the handstand walk event. He covered 250 feet upside down in just 1:11.9, beating the previous record by over 12 seconds. This display of gymnastic ability came from an athlete who was equally comfortable snatching 300+ pounds in weightlifting competitions. Known as “Mighty Mouse,” Rattay has built a career crossing between CrossFit, Olympic weightlifting, and now Grid League competition, where he joins the Houston Bandits as a rookie for their 2025 season.
Rattay’s path in athletics began on the wrestling mats of Noblesville, Indiana. Those early years of wrestling developed his exceptional body control and work ethic. The turning point came while working as a lifeguard at Life Time Fitness, where he caught the CrossFit Games on TV during a shift. Watching athletes combine heavy lifting with gymnastics movements sparked something in him – he decided then that he would make it to the CrossFit Games.
That dream began taking shape quickly. Rattay qualified for CrossFit Regionals six times, establishing himself as one of the top athletes in the Central Region. His first major breakthrough came in 2015 when he placed 15th as an individual. The following year, he achieved his Games goal by qualifying with Team Three Kings Black for the 2016 CrossFit Games. His most memorable moment came during the 2017 Regional with his record-setting handstand walk, where he credited his wrestling background for his comfort moving inverted.
While excelling in CrossFit, Rattay also pursued Olympic weightlifting at an elite level. Competing in the 81kg weight class (around 178 pounds), he earned silver at the 2021 USA Weightlifting National Championships with a 319kg total. He followed this up with bronze at the 2022 North American Open Series 1, posting impressive numbers of 140kg in the snatch and 175kg in the clean & jerk. His consistent podium finishes put him among America’s top lifters in his weight class.
The nickname “Mighty Mouse” fits Rattay perfectly – at a relatively small stature, he moves massive weights while maintaining incredible agility. This combination shined at the Wodapalooza Weightlifting Face Off, where he won the 2017 championship in dramatic head-to-head lifting battles. He returned to compete there multiple times, always holding his own against specialist weightlifters despite being known primarily as a CrossFit athlete.
Away from competition, Rattay’s life centers on faith and family. He’s married to Mary, who shares his passion for fitness, and they have two children – their second born in late 2024. His Instagram bio reads “Loving life with God, family, friends and fitness,” reflecting his priorities. Even with an intense training schedule, Rattay makes fatherhood and his Christian faith central parts of his identity.
Professionally, Rattay serves as General Manager at CrossFit Anywhere in Rancho Cordova, California. As a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer, he guides others toward their fitness goals while managing gym operations. He’s also ventured into media, co-hosting “The Joel & Mouse Fitness Funhouse” podcast where he interviews other athletes and shares training insights.
In 2025, Rattay takes on a new challenge with the Houston Bandits in the United Grid League. The team specifically recruited him as a bodyweight specialist, but his weightlifting numbers suggest he’ll contribute across multiple roles. Team announcements have dubbed him a potential “game-changer” – his rare mix of gymnastics excellence and raw strength could create mismatches against more specialized athletes.
Rattay’s journey from wrestling to CrossFit to weightlifting and now Grid League shows an athlete who keeps finding new ways to test himself. He’s proved that family values and competitive excellence can coexist, becoming a role model for others balancing multiple priorities. As he steps onto the Grid, Rattay brings years of high-level experience across different sports, setting up what could be an exciting new chapter in his athletic career.
