From Analyst to Athlete: John Young’s Journey to the Grid League
When the United Grid League announced its new Houston team for 2025, few were surprised to see John Young’s name on the roster. Now, Young is trading his microphone for a spot on the competition floor, bringing his impressive strength numbers and analytical mind to the Houston Bandits’ inaugural season.
The Path to Grid
Young’s athletic credentials were already solid before joining the Grid League. He consistently ranked among CrossFit’s top performers, qualifying for Quarterfinals (reserved for the top 10% of athletes) in both 2023 and 2024. In his most recent showing, he placed 681st in North America West – a significant achievement in one of the sport’s most competitive regions. But it’s his raw strength that turned heads: Young can snatch 310 pounds and clean nearly 400 pounds, numbers that put him in elite company among functional fitness athletes.
Building the Foundation
Unlike many professional athletes who grew up competing, Young found his athletic calling relatively late. He started CrossFit around 2016 and quickly showed natural talent for the sport, especially in Olympic lifting. He turned this passion into a career, coaching at Iron Antler Fitness in Fulshear, Texas and later founding his own JY Barbell Club. Through coaching, Young refined his own technique while helping others improve their strength and movement patterns.
Beyond the Barbell
Young became a familiar voice in CrossFit media circles, providing analysis for The Barbell Spin and appearing regularly on The Sevan Podcast. He built a reputation for data-driven predictions about competition outcomes, mixed with direct, sometimes controversial opinions. His analytical approach set him apart – he openly admitted to using statistics to form his takes while maintaining what he called “good eye for when certain people will do well.”
Personal Life & Motivation
Based in the Houston area, Young balances his athletic pursuits with family life. He and his wife welcomed a daughter in early 2025, adding the challenge of fatherhood to his already full schedule of training and coaching. His Instagram bio leads with “God is always number 1,” reflecting the faith that grounds his approach to both sport and life. Young often hits the gym at 5 AM, fitting training around family time and work commitments.
Looking Ahead
As the Houston Bandits prepare for their first season, Young steps into a unique role. His strength numbers suggest he’ll excel in heavy barbell events, while his deep understanding of strategy – developed during his time as an analyst – could prove valuable in team tactics. The controversy from his commentary days hasn’t fazed him; instead, it seems to have fueled his drive to prove himself on the competition floor.
The Complete Package
Young represents a rare combination in professional sports: an analyst who can back up his takes with elite performance. His journey from CrossFit beginner to Grid League athlete shows what’s possible with focused training and determination. While some know him for his bold predictions or impressive lifts, his impact extends beyond competition through his coaching and community involvement. As he transitions from commentator to competitor, Young brings built-in storylines and fan interest to the growing Grid League – and the skills to back it up.
