Ben Collins: A Rising Force in the United Grid League
As the United Grid League expands into Texas for its 2025 season, one name has generated particular buzz – Ben Collins, the newest utility player for the Houston Bandits. Collins enters the league as a highly anticipated rookie, bringing an extraordinary mix of strength and agility that caught the attention of Bandits officials during recruitment. His signing marks a significant addition to Houston’s inaugural roster, with the team specifically highlighting him as “one of the strongest utility players we’ve seen yet.”
Collins’ path to the Grid League showcases a rich athletic journey across multiple sports. At Auburn University, he competed in soccer, developing the speed and field awareness that would later serve him well in functional fitness competitions. But it was in Olympic weightlifting where Collins truly made his mark, achieving a competition snatch of over 300 pounds and finishing 9th nationally in the 89kg weight class among 35 competitors. This combination of soccer agility and weightlifting power helped Collins excel in CrossFit as well, where he ranked in the top 10% worldwide during the 2021 CrossFit Open.
The nickname “Highbar Papi” follows Collins in training circles, earned through his impressive gymnastics abilities and comfort with complex movements. His training videos regularly feature 300+ pound clean and jerks alongside fluid gymnastics work, demonstrating the rare versatility that made him an attractive prospect for the Grid League’s utility position.
Behind Collins’ athletic achievements lies a solid foundation of education and professional experience. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition from Auburn, adding a business minor to round out his education. Later, he completed a master’s in Exercise Science at Tennessee Tech, building on his understanding of human performance. This academic background supported a successful seven-year stint as an Olympic Sports Strength & Conditioning coach at Auburn, where he worked with elite athletes across gymnastics, swimming, track and field, and other sports.
Currently, Collins balances his Grid League training with coaching at Strong Body CrossFit in Houston, where he helps others achieve their fitness goals while maintaining his own high-level training. He also launched Beyond the Game Performance, his own fitness lifestyle brand, showing entrepreneurial spirit alongside his athletic pursuits.
An Alabama native, Collins carries his Southern roots proudly even as he embraces his new home in Houston. His social media presence shows an active lifestyle shared with his collie dog, and his followers get glimpses of both intense training sessions and everyday life. This relatability, combined with his impressive athletic feats, has already begun building a fanbase before his first Grid League match.
As the 2025 season approaches, expectations run high for Collins’ impact on the Houston Bandits. The team’s championship aspirations rely heavily on utility players who can handle both strength and skill events effectively. Collins fits this role perfectly, bringing proven competition experience and a unique athletic background to the expanding league.
For Ben Collins, 2025 represents more than just a rookie season – it’s the next chapter in a career built on versatility and dedication. His ability to excel across different sports and training disciplines suggests he’ll adapt quickly to the Grid League’s demands. As both athlete and coach, Collins continues to influence the fitness community while pursuing his own competitive goals, making him a name to watch in the growing sport of grid.
