Grid League 2026 – Bandits vs Flight: Houston Wins on the Road 20-14, Moves to 2-0

The day started with a roster fight. The Houston Bandits lost a single-match signing when Daryl McNeel tore up his shoulder, tried to bring in a replacement, and watched the Carolina Flight block the move. So the Bandits did it without the help. Houston jumped the brand-new Flight early, built a double-digit lead through the heavy middle of the match, and won 20-14 to move to 2-0.

A quick primer for newcomers. Grid is two coed teams racing head-to-head down an 80-foot floor, broken into four quadrants that get heavier as you go. Twelve races, points on each. The defending-veteran edge shows up in the small stuff: who tags in clean, who keeps the bar off the floor, who knows where to stand. Houston had all of that on a team playing its first match ever on the other side.

Houston banked the early points

The Bandits took the opening Partner Forward behind a fast finish from Lauren Olson. Then the Mirror, the barbell race where the bar cannot touch the ground once it leaves it, cracked the match open. The Flight had a decent lead until a missed lock-out dropped their bar, sent the whole team back to the start line, and handed Houston the race. Two races in, the Bandits led 4-1.

The first Ringer Point, the one-on-one duel inside the match, went to Matthew Rattay on the handstand-walk obstacle course, and Houston spent its bonus flag to make it worth three. The wager is the in-match version of a challenge flag, and the Bandits liked Rattay against a rookie on his hands. He ran away with it. Carolina could not finish inside the cap and took a zero, and the lead jumped to 7-1.

The Ladder put it out of reach

Carolina got its first taste of the lead in the Echo, the depth race a team runs twice 45 seconds apart, when Chelsea Espe and Hunter Williams stole the first round for the Flight’s first race win as a franchise. Houston answered in the second Echo and never trailed again. The Ladder, where players move heavier and heavier bars down the Grid for points, went to the Bandits 88 to 70 with Mason Belk and Ben Collins clearing the heavy end. By the back half, Houston was up 14-4.

The Flight pushed late, and it cost the Bandits a clean sweep

To Carolina’s credit, the closing stretch belonged to them. The Flight took both Triads, the conditioning race with separate men’s and women’s versions, and finished the day with the heavy flip sled. Then the Bandits ran into the problem they saw coming. Without their burpee-to-rings specialist, the player they lost in that morning roster fight, Houston had to improvise on the Sprint Relay, the eight-element closer where four men and four women must each finish the Grid. Sammy Bellot stepped onto the 9-foot-9 rings he had not planned to do, and the Bandits ran out of time before the last man crossed. The Flight won the relay with their own bonus flag for four points and closed the gap to 20-14, but the match was long decided.

You can’t mimic the energy that you feel when you’re here, but I got really darn close in my living room with my kids watching.

Rattay was home with the kids for the Bandits’ Week 1 win, screaming at the screen. Back on the Grid, he was a difference-maker, and Houston is 2-0 with the look of a team that knows exactly what it is. The Sprint Relay is a wrinkle to fix. The rest of the night was control.
