In a tightly contested Grid League match at the Tampa Bay Arena on Sunday, fans witnessed an intense battle between the undefeated Tampa Bay Brigade and the expansion Houston Bandits. The matchup featured outstanding performances on both sides as the teams traded victories across ten diverse races.
The match began with Houston showing they weren’t intimidated by the more established Brigade. The Bandits captured the first two races – Partner Forward and Mirror Race (Front Squats) – demonstrating remarkable cohesion for a new franchise. Their quick transitions and strategic athlete deployment gave them an early advantage.
“When the original rankings came out and they had the Bandits picked dead last, she called me up,” announcer Taylor revealed about Bandits owner/coach/player Sophia Davenport. “She’s like ‘am I crazy for thinking that we can compete?'”
The Brigade responded in Race 3, where their undefeated specialist captured the Ringer Point Race featuring bar-facing burpees. Despite a challenge flag from Houston claiming improper technique, officials confirmed the Brigade victory after video review.
Tampa Bay found their rhythm in the Echo Race, showcasing their depth across multiple disciplines. The Brigade’s seamless transitions between thrusters, handstand complexes, ring muscle-ups, and the flip sled earned them a crucial victory. They capitalized further by successfully deploying their bonus flag for Echo 2, extending their lead.
The Sandbag Ladder provided some of the day’s most impressive displays of raw strength. Both teams’ athletes cleared increasingly higher platforms while carrying 200-pound (men) and 150-pound (women) sandbags. Tampa Bay’s coordination gave them a narrow victory by just four points (74-70).
In perhaps the most technically impressive moment of the match, Bandits’ gymnast Natalie Schneider stunned the crowd during the Women’s Triad. Though her team fell short in the race, Schneider showcased extraordinary body control by walking backward on her hands across the entire grid.
“She is literally moving… like if she was walking like a normal person,” exclaimed one astonished announcer. “She’s up here moonwalking across the grid on her hands!”
The Bandits showed resilience by capturing the Men’s Triad after deploying their bonus flag strategically. The team of John Young, Mason Belk, and the specialist Matthew Rattay dominated the handstand elements, with Rattay’s exceptional gymnastics skills proving decisive.
Entering the final Sprint Relay, both teams remained within striking distance. The multi-element race featured suicide runs, barbell snatches, rope climbs, triple-unders, overhead squats, burpee-to-rings, handstand push-ups, and heavy clusters in succession.
Despite a valiant effort from Houston, Tampa Bay’s Christopher Cioffi and Hannah Bissett executed flawlessly on the technical elements, allowing Brandon Thayres to finish the final barbell clusters and secure victory for the Brigade.
The Tampa Bay Brigade improved to 2-0 for the season with the win, while the Houston Bandits fell to 0-2. However, Houston’s significant improvement from their debut match showed that the expansion franchise has quickly found its competitive footing in the Grid League.
The Bandits are the official Houston team of the United Grid League.
Grid League is the future of team sports. It features men and women together in an intense and exciting race based game on strategy and athleticism.
