From Second Chance to Star: Alexander Velez’s Grid League Journey
When Alexander Velez first tried out for the Orlando Aces, he didn’t make the cut. But fate had other plans – just a week later, another player dropped out and Velez got the call that would change his athletic career. He seized that second chance and ran with it, rising to become team captain by his second year under coach Taylar Stallings.
Over his four years with the Aces, Velez has become a cornerstone of the team as a utility player, able to excel across multiple disciplines. His leadership helped guide the Aces to a Northern Conference runners-up finish in 2018. His impact continues to grow, as shown by his team-leading 118 impact score during Week 4 performances this season.
Before finding his home in Grid League, Velez built his athletic foundation through seven years of football. He later discovered functional fitness and spent eight years coaching and training in CrossFit gyms. His physical capabilities are remarkable – he can clean and jerk 325 pounds, snatch 245 pounds, and back squat 435 pounds. His gymnastics skills are equally impressive, including 100-foot handstand walks, 12 consecutive ring muscle-ups, and 55 unbroken pull-ups.
Away from competition, Velez is a dedicated family man. He has a young daughter with his girlfriend and another child on the way. Based in the Kissimmee, Florida area, he openly shares the challenges and rewards of balancing family life with competitive athletics, calling it “a never-ending learning experience.”
In November 2020, Velez launched Trinity Wellness and Athletics LLC, putting his eight years of coaching experience to work in his own business. His approach goes beyond just physical training – he believes in developing both the body and mind of his clients. This holistic philosophy reflects his understanding that true fitness encompasses mental well-being alongside physical strength.
The core of Velez’s training philosophy centers on using fitness as a tool for complete personal development. He brings his competitive experience and deep understanding of movement to each client, while keeping focus on the mental aspects of health and performance.
From his football days to his current role as a Grid League standout, Velez’s story is one of constant growth and adaptation. That initial rejection from the Aces could have been the end of his Grid League dreams. Instead, it became the first chapter in an ongoing story of an athlete who proves that second chances, combined with dedication and hard work, can lead to extraordinary achievements.
