Taylor Sturgis: A Grid League Star’s Journey
Taylor Sturgis lights up the United Grid League as a dynamic utility player for the Fort Lauderdale Lions, wearing #0111. His path to Grid League success runs through an impressive CrossFit career that showcases his natural athletic ability and dedication to functional fitness.
As a former Orlando Aces player, Sturgis has proven himself adaptable across multiple teams and competitive formats. His experience in Grid League has helped him develop a unique approach to training, one that differs significantly from his CrossFit background. “Training for grid has been a huge stepping stone for me,” Sturgis explains. “It’s very intentional compared to CrossFit. In CrossFit, you could be in the gym for 5-6 hours a day, but in Grid it’s only 90 minutes.”
His CrossFit achievements speak for themselves. Sturgis reached a worldwide ranking of 478th in the men’s CrossFit Open in 2024 and competed as a 2023 CrossFit Games semi-finalist in the North America West region, placing 56th. His strength numbers are eye-catching – a 300-pound snatch, 370-pound clean and jerk, 450-pound back squat, and 520-pound deadlift. His athletic measurements are equally impressive, with a 57-inch box jump and 40-inch vertical leap.
Beyond competition, Sturgis has built a life around fitness as both a business owner and coach. He owns a CrossFit affiliate and holds certification as a USAW coach. His connection to CrossFit Lafayette in Louisiana shows his commitment to building community through fitness while pursuing his own athletic goals.
The transition between CrossFit and Grid League competition highlights Sturgis’s adaptability. While many athletes struggle to shift between different competitive formats, he has embraced the challenge and excelled. His performance in benchmark CrossFit workouts like Fran (4:05) and Grace (1:40) demonstrates the well-rounded fitness that makes him valuable in Grid League competition.
Sturgis shares his journey through various media appearances, including features on “Plate Stack Chat” and YouTube profiles. His openness about training methods and recovery strategies gives fans and fellow athletes insight into what it takes to compete at the highest levels of functional fitness.
As a utility player for the Fort Lauderdale Lions, Sturgis continues to push his limits and redefine what’s possible in functional fitness competition. His story shows how dedication, smart training, and business savvy can come together to create a successful career in the evolving world of competitive fitness.
