Darren Lasso: Grid League Veteran and CrossFit Coach

Grid League Career

When Darren Lasso stepped into Grid League competition in 2012, few could have predicted his lasting impact on the sport. Over eight years, he has become a respected figure known for his versatility and consistent performance. Currently wearing #7 for the Orlando Aces, Lasso previously competed for the Fort Lauderdale Lions as #07. His role as a Utility Player showcases his adaptability across different movement patterns and workout styles. In September 2024, Lasso delivered a standout performance for the Aces, winning a challenging “Ringer Point race” that combined chest-to-bar pull-ups with complex touch variations.

Athletic Background

Lasso’s competitive spirit extends well beyond Grid League. His CrossFit career includes impressive finishes in the worldwide Open, with his highest ranking of 1,981st place in 2020. He’s proven himself in regional competitions too, taking 11th place at the 2023 Fall Pensacola Beach Brawl. As a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer, Lasso doesn’t just compete – he excels at teaching others. His athletic foundation began on the soccer fields of St. Petersburg, where he played for ten years before discovering functional fitness.

Personal Background

Growing up in St. Petersburg, Florida shaped Lasso’s approach to sports and community. Standing 5’10” and weighing 197 pounds, his athletic build suits the demands of both Grid League and CrossFit competition. When he found CrossFit in 2016, it marked the beginning of a journey that would transform both his athletic career and professional life.

Professional Life

As co-owner and head coach of CrossFit St. Pete, Lasso has built more than just a gym – he’s created a community. His specialty as a Bodyweight Specialist reflects his detailed approach to movement and technique. In the gym, Lasso breaks down complex movements to their foundations, ensuring his athletes move safely and efficiently. His coaching style balances competitive drive with genuine care for his athletes’ development.

Personal Development

Lasso’s path hasn’t been without challenges. He openly shares his past struggles with procrastination and punctuality, turning these experiences into valuable lessons for his athletes. By developing strong accountability systems and focusing on consistent improvement, he’s become not just a better athlete but a more effective leader.

Media Presence

While Lasso’s athletic achievements speak for themselves, his impact on the sport has been captured through various media appearances. A 2018 athlete highlight video showcased his journey, and his regular features in United Grid League content continue to inspire new athletes in the sport.

Personal Mission

For Lasso, fitness is about more than personal achievement – it’s about building others up. He believes anyone willing to be consistent, coachable, and community-driven can succeed in CrossFit. This philosophy drives everything from his coaching style to his competitive approach, making him not just an athlete to watch, but a leader to follow.
