The Lions established their presence early with Eric Cardona powering through overhead squats while the Palms suffered a minor setback when a fault was called on a squat snatch. Despite a late struggle from the Lions with two reps remaining in the final quadrant, they managed to finish first with time to spare, taking an early 2-1 point advantage.

The momentum continued into the Mirror race, where athletes performed hang clean and jerks with men using 185 pounds and women 120 pounds. In a dramatic moment midway through, a Palms athlete made a crucial save when the barbell nearly touched the ground – which would have resulted in a fault. The Lions maintained composure and edged out a narrow victory by approximately two seconds, extending their lead to 4-1.

As home team, the Palms selected snatches for the third race, hoping to leverage their strength advantage. The strategy paid off when Jessica Plasencia established a superior rhythm against her Lions counterpart Chelsea Sellers, who appeared hampered by a wrapped left shoulder. Plasencia finished well ahead, putting the Palms back in contention at 4-2.

The Echo race showcased the teams’ endurance with stations including kettlebell snatches, deficit handstand push-ups, medicine ball muscle-ups, and heavy clusters. The Lions dominated both rounds, particularly in the final quadrant where they created separation, pushing their advantage to 7-3.

The Ladder race revealed contrasting strategies as teams tackled progressively heavier deadlift-clean complexes. The Palms started at the lighter weights while the Lions focused on the heavier bars. Multiple athletes from both sides impressed with heavy lifts, but the Palms’ approach proved more effective, narrowing the Lions’ lead to 8-5.

Tension mounted during the away team’s Ringer Point selection, where the Lions chose a challenging triple-touch combination. In what became the closest race of the match, officials needed a photo finish to determine that the Palms had won by the slimmest of margins, cutting the deficit to just two points.

Sensing the momentum shift, the Lions employed their bonus flag for the Jack and Jill race, making it worth three points. Their investment paid dividends as they dominated the handstand-focused elements, with Eric Cardona punctuating their victory with a theatrical handstand hold at the finish line. The Male Triad that followed saw fortunes reverse when a Lions athlete knocked over a box during a transition, allowing the Palms to finish several reps ahead and keep the match competitive at 14-10.

With everything on the line, the Palms played their bonus flag for the final Sprint Relay race, making it worth four points – enough to potentially overtake the Lions. The early stages saw both teams trading advantages through muscle-ups and pistol thrusters. The Lions maintained a small lead through the handstand walks and extended it during the final stations.

As Marcos Medina approached the finish with the 225-pound barbell for overhead squats, the crowd rose to their feet. With each controlled repetition, it became clear that the Fort Lauderdale Lions had secured the Southern Conference Championship with a final score of 17-14.

The victory sends the Lions to the Olympia Grid League Championship match, where they’ll face the Orlando Aces in what promises to be an epic Florida showdown for the league title.
