The South Florida Sports Complex was packed to capacity Friday night as two undefeated teams in the Grid League’s Southern Division faced off in what many had billed as an early-season championship preview. The Fort Lauderdale Lions and Palm Beach Breakers, both sporting perfect 3-0 records, squared off in a contest featuring some of the league’s most impressive athletes.
In perfect conditions for competition, the atmosphere crackled with energy as the two rivals prepared for what would prove to be an intense battle across ten challenging races.
The Breakers started with confidence, claiming victories in the first three events. The Partner Forward race saw the Lions jump to an early lead through Eric Cardona and Janine Nicole, but Michele Washington‘s struggles with overhead squats in the final quadrant opened the door for Vida Vetterkind to power through burpee box jump overs and secure the win for Palm Beach.
The Breakers’ momentum continued in the Mirror Race, where their superior coordination moving the barbell through “human racks” gave them an early advantage. Despite a late surge from the Lions in the final quadrant, Palm Beach maintained composure to take a 2-0 lead.
The third race brought the first Ringer Point of the night – Triple Unders – pitting the previously undefeated Darren Lasso against Breakers rookie Nate Cobb. In a surprising turn, Lasso missed one triple under while Cobb completed all twelve flawlessly, extending Palm Beach’s lead to 3-0.
The Lions finally found their footing in the Echo Race, splitting the double-event with the Breakers. After dropping the first Echo, Fort Lauderdale responded with urgency in Echo 2, where Tricia Davis secured their first race win with a powerful final snatch.
The Snatch Ladder provided one of the night’s technical highlights, with both Vida Vetterkind and Ryan DeMattie clearing all bars in their respective quadrants. However, the Breakers’ overall consistency gave them an impressive 84-67 victory in the event, pushing their lead to a seemingly insurmountable margin.
With their backs against the wall, the Lions found new life in the Farmer’s Carry Ringer Point. After Breakers’ Joshua Newell tripped and fell forward while leading, Ryan Pybas maintained control of his 215-pound weights to complete the carry and win. Having thrown their bonus flag for this race, the Lions earned crucial extra points to narrow the gap.
The comeback gained steam in the Jack and Jill Race, where Darren Lasso – rebounding from his earlier ringer point loss – excelled at triple touches while the Breakers struggled with no-reps, giving Fort Lauderdale another win.
The teams split the Triad races, with the Breakers taking the Female Triad despite an unusual grip struggle from the typically flawless Vida Vetterkind, while the Lions dominated the Male Triad behind Eric Cardona’s butterfly muscle-ups and coordinated teamwork.
With the match hanging in the balance, the Sprint Relay would determine the winner. Initial competition appeared to give the Lions victory, but a referee review regarding pull-up counts forced a rerun of the final four elements. Despite Breakers’ Reese Lions suffering a knee injury during the rerun, he courageously continued. Fort Lauderdale’s Marcos Medina built a crucial lead on the deficit handstand push-ups, allowing Marcos Medina to maintain the advantage on the closing thrusters.
When Medina completed the final repetition, the Fort Lauderdale Lions had pulled off a remarkable comeback victory, overcoming the Palm Beach Breakers after trailing 3-0 early in the match. The win keeps the Lions undefeated at 4-0 and gives them sole possession of first place in the Southern Division, with a crucial tiebreaker advantage over their rivals should they finish with identical records.
The Lions are the official Fort Lauderdale team of the United Grid League.
