The Lions grabbed the early advantage in Race 1’s Partner Forward, where Marcos Medina established a quick lead in the first quadrant. The Palms attempted to counter by delaying their tag-ins, but a costly fault from the Lions’ Emmy Geta opened a window for the Palms. The opportunity closed quickly when Jessica Plasencia slipped on the rope jumps, allowing the Lions to secure the victory and take a 2-1 lead.
The momentum shifted in Race 2 as the teams tackled the Mirror Back Squat. With heavy barbells that couldn’t touch the ground until all 40 repetitions were complete, both teams demonstrated impressive strength endurance. While the Lions jumped ahead in the first quadrant with strong performances from Medina and Austin Lavalli, the Palms steadily made up ground. By the fourth quadrant, Jessica Plasencia and Brandon Schipper pulled away to win decisively, knotting the overall score at 3-3.
The first Ringer Point showcased the specialized skills that make Grid League unique. Lions veteran Eric Cardona dominated the Medball Handstand Walk, demonstrating his gymnastics background with near-perfect form throughout the course. Coach Damien’s call for crowd support highlighted the significance of the moment as Cardona secured the full point, with Palms’ Sebastian Alvarez unable to finish within the 20% time requirement for a participation point.
The Echo Race further demonstrated the technical demands of the sport. The Ladder race provided the Palms an opportunity to narrow the gap. With progressively heavier weights for squat cleans to push press, the strategic deployment of specialists became crucial. Brandon Schipper’s impressive 300-pound lift in the fourth quadrant proved decisive as the Palms outscored the Lions 51-47, bringing the overall match score to 10-7 in favor of the Lions.
The Away Ringer Point showcased Marcus Washington’s power for the Palms against Emmy Geta in the Five Clusters race. Washington’s commanding performance secured an important point for the Palms, though Geta’s finish within the time requirement earned the Lions a participation point, keeping their lead at 11-9.
The Lions reasserted control in the Jack and Jill race, where Eric Cardona’s handstand work again proved valuable. Despite a valiant effort from the Palms, who recovered from a false start to complete the course within the time cap, the Lions extended their lead to 13-10.
Both the Female and Male Triad races featured neck-and-neck competition through multiple elements. The women’s contest came down to a dramatic finish when Bryleigh Hansen lost her balance during the farmer carry after looking to check her opponent’s position, allowing Reagan Hathaway to secure a split-second victory for the Lions. In the men’s competition, synchronization issues on burpee box jumps cost the Palms valuable time they couldn’t recover.
The Sprint Relay served as the final showdown, with eight elements requiring precise handoffs and execution. Despite strong performances from Sebastian Alvarez and Heather Hudson for the Palms, the Lions maintained their lead through each stage, culminating with Eduardo Rodriguez handling the heavy deadlifts to secure the race victory.
As the teams embraced post-match, the Fort Lauderdale Lions celebrated their overall match victory over the South Beach Palms. Coach Briley Hansen acknowledged during a sideline interview that male gymnastics elements had been their biggest weakness, citing roster limitations as a factor.
