New Grid League Rules in 2025

The United Grid League has introduced several new rules for the 2025 season that will give teams more options and add drama to match play.

Super Wild Card Creates Big Advantage

Teams now get one Super Wild Card per season – a powerful tool to influence a single race.

To use it, teams must tell the Race Umpire at least one minute before a race starts. The Super Wild Card lets any player on the roster or (available or reserve) to compete in that race, even if roster rules would normally prevent it. This includes using a ringer point player who already competed or somone typically ineligable for a match.

The catch? Once used, it’s gone for the entire season. Teams must also identify which active roster member the wild card player is replacing.

Think of it as a strategic weapon teams can deploy once per season when they need a crucial race win.

Challenge Flag System

Teams can now officially challenge referee decisions using an official challenge flag system. Each team gets two red challenge flags per match.

Only the team captain or head coach can throw a challenge flag, and they have just 30 seconds after a race ends to do so. They can talk with the chief referee about their complaint before throwing the flag onto the Grid.

If the challenge succeeds and shows the referee made an error that definitively affected the race outcome, the team keeps their flag and the race gets re-run. If the challenge fails (the call was correct OR deemed NOT to definitvely affect the outcome), the team loses that flag for the match.

NOTE: The definitively affected rule states that re-runs will only occur if the mistake or issue DID influence the outcome of the race. This helps ensure unaffected races are not unfairly re-run and helps keep the pace of the match high. It’s important to note that fatigue and strategy are not considered regarding the defitively affected rule. Only a clear and distinct time expense equal to or greater than the difference in the outcome of the race. Example: the time a rep took to complete that didn’t have to be completed.

Teams can only challenge once per race, and unused flags don’t carry over to the next match.

Updated Flag System Clarifies Communication

The league has standardized all flags used during matches:

  • Yellow Flag: Start line violations
  • Green Flag: Race completion signal at finish line
  • White Flag: Bonus race activation (makes race worth an extra point)
  • Red Flag: Challenge flag for disputing calls
  • Checkered Flag: Official referee review

The bonus flag system remains from previous seasons. Coaches can throw their white bonus flag to make any race worth an extra point. The flag must be thrown at least one minute before race start, except for between Echo races where it is 30 seconds instead of 1 min.

These rule changes add new layers of strategy while maintaining the fast-paced action Grid League fans expect. Teams will need to carefully consider when to use their limited challenge flags and their one-time Super Wild Card to maximize their competitive advantage.
