Match Preview · 2026 Season

Grid League Heads to Lakeland With Four Matches and Two Debuts

The 2026 season is back this Saturday, June 20, with four Grid League matches at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland. Two new franchises play the first matches in their history, and the schedule runs from 9:45 in the morning to a closing match that starts after 6:30 at night.

For anyone watching their first match, here is the shape of it. Two coed teams line up on parallel lanes of a playing surface called the Grid and race each other through a set of barbell, gymnastics, and sprint stations. Players specialize the way a baseball roster carries starters and relievers, so the coach decides who runs each race. Win the most races and you win the match. The closing Sprint Relay works like a fourth quarter, where one result can swing the whole day.

Carolina Flight vs Houston Bandits · 9:45 AM ET

Carolina Flight plays the first match in franchise history to open the day, one of two clubs that joined the league for 2026. The Houston Bandits know what that first one feels like. Houston had never won a Grid League match until opening day, when it edged South Beach 19-18 on a Sprint Relay rerun. Now the Bandits are the side with something to protect, and Carolina is the one chasing a first win.

Atlanta Wild vs Fort Lauderdale Lions · 12:30 PM ET

Atlanta comes into the midday match looking to bounce back. The Wild led or stayed level through ten straight races on opening day before the Las Vegas Venom grabbed the lead on a fan-voted ringer and closed it out, 19-16. Fort Lauderdale is heading the other way. The Lions won nine of twelve races in a 23-16 win over Tampa Bay, the most lopsided result of the weekend, and utility player Taylor Sturgis was not shy about the goal. “The Lions are here, man. The Lions are ready to win a championship. I’m calling that early.”

South Beach Palms vs SWFL Sharks · 3:45 PM ET

South Beach has a finish to forget. The Palms won seven races and led by four points late on opening day, then lost it to Houston, 19-18. The reward is a date with the defending champion. The SWFL Sharks opened their title defense by surviving Palm Beach 18-17, and in their neon green they are still the team nobody in the conference wants to draw.

NY Wolves vs Tampa Bay Brigade · 6:30 PM ET

The night belongs to the day’s other debut. The New York Wolves play the first match in franchise history against a Tampa Bay Brigade team already looking to answer a loss. The Brigade took both ringer duels on opening day but dropped the match to Fort Lauderdale, 16-23. The Wolves carry a line on their crest, “Empire built, never broken.” Lakeland is where they find out how it reads against a team that has already been through a season.
