Grid League Approves Rulebook Updates for the 2026 Season

The United Grid League has approved a set of updates to its 2026 rulebook. All of them are in effect now and carry through the playoffs and the championship.

Team owners reviewed the changes across two league meetings, on June 30 and July 14. Commissioner Mather Wiswall presented each proposal, owners debated and revised the language on the calls, and the final document was circulated to every team for approval before it went into the book.

Most of these come out of the June 20 match day in Lakeland, where four matches produced a handful of situations the rulebook did not clearly address. For the full account of that day, read the Lakeland recap.

Here is what changed and why.

Playing Conditions and Safety

Flooring

Every effort will be made by United Grid League staff to create even conditions with the flooring. It is not possible to remove every imperfection or keep both sides exactly the same. Flooring imperfections are not considered interference to a race and are not grounds for a rerun. It is up to the team to be aware of conditions and adjust their performance accordingly.

The league installs its playing surface in a different building for every match, so identical conditions on both sides are not realistic. Rather than leave surface quality open to protest on a case-by-case basis, the rule sets one expectation for everyone. Teams read the conditions and adjust, the same way a team adjusts to a fast track or a heavy field.

Safety

If a participant’s safety or wellbeing is in danger, the League may take any steps necessary to correct the danger, without regard to rulebook adherence or match play. In any unexpected safety/well-being situation, the league errs on the side of helping the participant.

This gives officials clear authority to stop or intervene in a race when someone is at risk, without weighing it against the rulebook first. The second sentence sets the default: if the situation is a judgment call, the league helps the player.

Equipment

Illegal Equipment

Illegal equipment used during a race results in a zero and the player in question is ejected for the remainder of the match or for Partner Forward through Echo of the following match if caught in Sprint Relay.

Owners wanted a penalty with real weight behind it. A rerun is not enough of a deterrent, since it hands the offending team a second shot at the same race. Under the new language the team takes zero points for the race and the player is out. The opposing team’s result stands as the race resulted.

Race Reviews and Timing

Last Rep and Re-Direction Time Penalty

In the event a race review determines the last rep of an element should have been faulted in a situation where the player would have had to come back to pick up a strength element to complete the final rep, a standard time penalty of 4 seconds will be added. In the event a race review determines a forced action should have taken place but it’s impossible to know the true time expense (example: re-direction from entering the rig from the end instead of under pull-up bars) a standard 4-second penalty will be applied.

When a review finds that a final rep should not have counted, the real cost of fixing it in the moment would have been the trip back to the implement, not just the rep itself. The same logic applies when a player should have been redirected to a different path on the Grid. Those numbers are impossible to know after the fact, so the league set a flat 4 seconds. Every case gets treated the same way.

Ranking Rule Update

In the event of a Race rerun, the original Race time is used for Season Rank Total purposes. If the rerun was the result of an officiating error, timing error, equipment failure or is otherwise affected unexpectedly, the time (used for tie break ranking purposes only) will be the original Race time plus or minus the estimated time impact of the error as established during the review process.

Season rank is the tiebreaker at the end of the year, so the times feeding it need to be accurate. The previous version could only subtract time, which assumed an error could only ever cost a team. Now the adjustment works in both directions.

Rosters and Submissions

Fan-Voted Ringer Submission

Each team gets one free change to its fan-voted ringer designation. Any change after that, or a late or missed submission, means the team’s ringer starts the race in a prone position.

The fan-voted ringer is a head-to-head race between one player from each team, with the matchup put to a public vote before the match. Late or changed submissions undercut the promotion, and until now there was no consequence. Each team gets one free change. After that, the player starts the race face down on the floor, which is a penalty fans can see happen live.

Sprint Relay Roster Shortage

If a team cannot field four men or four women for the Sprint Relay, it must use its super wild card. If the super wild card is unavailable, one player may perform two elements and re-enter the race by circling back to the start line off of the Grid.

The Sprint Relay closes every match and requires four men and four women through eight elements. A team short on available players now has a path to run it. The super wild card is a once-per-season override that activates any available roster or reserve player for a single race. If it is already spent, one player doubles up and runs two elements. It is a disadvantage, but the race gets run.

What Did Not Change

Roster violation penalties stay where they were. A team that plays an unsubmitted player still takes an automatic zero for that race.

Mid-match substitutions for injury are still not permitted. Rosters lock when they are submitted, and teams manage their own availability within that. Owners discussed both at length and chose to leave them alone for the rest of the season and revisit in the offseason.
