Breakers reveal new philosophy after stealing players from other teams

Along with announcing a new logo and uniform design, the Palm Beach Breakers have positioned themselves as serious contenders for the 2025 United Grid League season after assembling what many consider one of the strongest rosters in the league.

After narrowly missing the playoffs last season due to a tiebreak based on race times, the Breakers made aggressive moves in the offseason to strengthen their lineup. When rumors circulated that some key players were considering other teams, the re-signing of Vida Vetterkind proved crucial in stabilizing the roster.

What followed was a wave of signings that caught the attention of the entire league. The Breakers secured talent from various teams including Jojo Gomez, Alyssa Martinez, Kodi Shaefer, Dylan Fullwood (Vetterkind’s best friend), and Sabrina Cheney, who returned after taking a year off.

Kodi Schaefer explained his decision: “No hard feelings leaving the Palms. I needed a change. I love grid always have. Took last year off to clear my head and get a handle on my life. Choosing the Breakers was an easy pick. Matt and Matt both got me on a call and pitch me on the team I believe is going to be unstoppable going into the season.”

For Joseph Gomez, the decision centered around leadership. “This season, I decided to join the Breakers because of two key people: Matt and Matt. I hold no ill feelings toward the Venom; last season is behind me. My focus is on the future—becoming the best player I can be and a strong leader for my team.”

The team culture appears to be a major draw for athletes. Alyssa Martinez cited this as a key factor: “I chose the Breakers because first off I love Matt, he is one of the most understanding and supportive team owner/coaches in the league in my opinion. Secondly this team is honestly so wholesome and we already have such a supportive family vibe going on.”

Some players, like Sabrina Cheney who came from the Daytona Beach Venom, were looking for a fresh start. “I’m grateful to be on the breakers. I don’t know how the Venom are doing or what they’re doing exactly right now, but didn’t want to be involved in any unnecessary drama,” she said during a recent team practice.

The Breakers didn’t just focus on established talent. An early offseason combine helped them sign promising athletes that multiple teams were pursuing, including Billie Shelton and Haley Booker.

Head Coach and Owner Matt Hornaday has established a clear theme for the season with the hashtag “those who stay.” As he explained to the team: “Those who stay will be champions, right? That is something that we talked about in every single one of our exit interviews with all of our athletes from last season. And that is the moniker or the statement of this team. Those who stay will be champions because this isn’t just one season for us. This is a continuation season over season for us.”

This philosophy reflects the Breakers’ commitment to building not just for immediate success but for long-term team development. The emphasis on continuity and improvement has created a strong bond among team members who describe the atmosphere as “a good family” where players genuinely care about each other.

With their strengthened roster and clear team identity, the Palm Beach Breakers have set themselves up as serious challengers for the 2025 championship.
