Alec Smith signs to the Grid League's Daytona Venom
At the last match on August 17th, the Daytona Venom had some conflict among the team that ultimately led to several team members departing from the team for the remainder of the Season. Read the Venom’s statement about this.
This, combined with a few injuries, put the team in a tough spot heading into the biggest event of the regular season at the Mr Olympia Regular Season Finale in Las Vegas Nevada. They needed to recruit a few mid season signings to get back up to a manageable roster.
In a true demonstration of the community, and sport first mentality, other teams jumped to help the Venom out. Teams and players began to share the post of the Venom looking to make signing and messaging potential players.
Alec Smith was one of the potentials that got comments/messages from players on other teams mentioning the opportunity.
Alec is a 4 time CrossFit Games athlete (twice individual, twice team), an accomplished gymnast, and a former Grid League player having played in the original version of the sport for the Boston Iron as teammate of Fort Lauderdale Lion head coach Jaime Gold.
Alec responded to the messages and connected with head coach for the Venom in Paul Behar. Paul gave Alec some testers that featured elements coming up in the Vegas match formats.
Alec is coming off of treatment for a hip injury and wanted to make sure he felt solid enough to be able to compete effectively. Clearly, it all worked out and Alec is signed to the team.

“I can’t wait to jump back into GRID with the Daytona Venom. The coaches and team have been awesome so far. I love all of the the high skill, fast paced movements and am excited to get back out onto the floor & go head to head against the best in the world!”

The team has a whole new vibe heading into Las Vegas, but they did take some hits in the strength department on both the male and female side in the team transition. It will be fun to see how they work through those challenges with an instant star in the League now backing the team performance.
